You ready to start over?
For me, midlife felt like I was standing at the crossroads. My eldest had moved out, my youngest made a lifetime commitment to her partner, and despite still having the youngest at home and two furbabies under our roof, life was shifting. The time had come when my partner and I started asking “What do we want for our life?” While this can feel exciting, it can also be unsettling. It’s often the stage where self-doubt creeps in and we convince ourselves that we’ve missed our chance to start something new.
I believe the opposite is true. Midlife is one of the best times to begin again because you’re no longer starting from scratch. Friendships are evolving and changing, family dynamics have shifted, you’re no longer tied down to the mechanics of feeling like you’re living like Groundhog Day.
We’re starting with decades of experience, resilience and wisdom. We’ve learned what matters to us, what drains our energy and what brings us joy. We’ve navigated challenges, celebrated successes and discovered strengths we probably didn’t even realise we had.
By this stage of life, we have so much more to offer than we may realise. We bring:
Perhaps you’ve been thinking about starting a business, changing careers, writing a book, studying something new or simply creating more purpose in your life. If that idea keeps returning, don’t ignore it. Dreams have a funny way of staying with us until we’re ready to pay attention. More often than not, they return because they’re aligned with who we’re becoming, not who we’ve been.
The biggest obstacle isn’t usually a lack of ability. It’s the stories we tell ourselves. We convince ourselves that we’re too old, not experienced enough or that someone else is already doing what we’d like to do. The truth is, confidence isn’t something we wait for, it grows every time we take a small step forward.
If you’re wondering where to begin, don’t focus on the whole journey. Focus on the next step. Write your ideas down, have a conversation with someone you trust, research what’s possible, or simply give yourself permission to dream again. Small, consistent actions create momentum, and momentum builds confidence.
Midlife isn’t about starting over because you’ve failed. It’s about starting again because you’ve grown. The woman you are today brings more wisdom, compassion and courage than the woman you were twenty years ago, and that experience is your greatest strength.
So instead of asking yourself, “Am I too late?” perhaps it’s time to ask a different question:
“What could be possible if I gave myself permission to begin?”
