You’ve finished another day’s work and you sit at your desk contemplating getting in the car and driving home. Thankfully, this morning you remembered to plan tonight’s dinner so that’s one less hassle to worry about. You say goodnight to your colleagues; who have a smile on their face at the prospect of going home, but you’re dragging your heels. You hop in the car and pop on your favourite music or radio station for the drive home and think to yourself, I’ll go the scenic route tonight and enjoy the space I’m in. I’m very thankful that my car is my safe space.
Thoughts start running through your head of all that has to be done when you get home. That dreaded feeling arises again and you feel your chest starting to tighten, you feel the tears start to well up in your eyes and that feeling of dread.
Some of these feelings may include:
All of the above have been feelings I’ve had in the past; and sometimes still do! But, the one thing I have learnt is managing the balance of working fulltime and managing the home and taking back some of the control. There is plenty that can be done but it’s about how you approach it. One simple idea is setting up a chore chart, this includes consulting the family who wants to do what. If they don’t want to? Don’t expect clean clothes or food on the table. This may seem harsh, but it works!
There are plenty of other hints and tips you can put into practice, but the most important practice of all is you. Making time for you. Not sure how?
